IoT devices to communicate social availability in physical space
A fleet of small electronic devices to explore how colleagues in open-planned studio workplaces can communicate heads down, focus states. Custom printed circuit boards were designed, fabricated & assembled in-house. The PCBs are designed with minimal exposed electronic components, integrating graphical and instructional information directly on the PCBs using properties of circuit board production.
The devices were designed to be customised (enclosures could be fabricated, but are not necessary) & use as much off-the-shelf parts as possible - the custom PCBs connect directly to Adafruit Huzzah32 Feather development boards & the input & output circuits are connect via 3.5mm audio cables.
Optionally, the devices can be connected to the internet, broadcasting their states to a centralised Azure Function, which other products & applications can consume e.g. status boards.
A configuration tool (written in Python) allows the user to update the WiFi settings of the device, as well as customising the ‘do not disturb‘ LED colour and timer indicator LED brightness
